At first glance, many racing steering wheel systems may appear similar. Behind the faceplate, however, are completely different engineering decisions—how the system communicates with the vehicle, how commands are transmitted, what materials are used, and how long the technology has been tested and refined.

1. Direct CAN Bus Integration Instead of an OBD-Based Solution
Many competing systems receive vehicle data through the OBD-II port because it offers a convenient connection point. Convenient, however, does not always mean it is the best engineering solution.
The OBD-II port was designed primarily as a diagnostic interface—not as the permanent foundation of an advanced driver-control system.
Depending on the vehicle and connected device, continuously operating through the OBD port may create several potential issues:
- Unexpected vehicle warnings or diagnostic faults
- Communication conflicts with factory vehicle modules
- Vehicle networks remaining awake after the car is turned off
- Unnecessary parasitic battery draw
- Delayed or inconsistent data response
- Loss of access to the OBD port for diagnostic or data-logging equipment
Keeping an external OBD device connected may prevent certain vehicle modules from entering their normal sleep state. Over time, this can contribute to unnecessary power consumption and possible low-voltage issues, especially when the vehicle is stored for extended periods.
This is why JQ Werks chose direct CAN bus integration.
Our RevLED shift-light system receives engine-speed information directly from the vehicle’s CAN bus network, delivering an immediate and accurate response without occupying the OBD port. The driver can continue using the port for diagnostics, tuning equipment, data loggers, or other dedicated devices.
In modern automotive electronics and professional motorsport applications, direct CAN bus communication is the more robust architecture. It allows the system to communicate closer to the source, reduces dependence on an external diagnostic interface, and creates a cleaner, more integrated solution.
We did not choose the easiest connection. We chose the connection that delivers the stability and performance our customers expect.
2. OEM-Grade Wired Connections Instead of Wireless Communication
Wireless technology can simplify installation, but a critical driver-control system should never prioritize convenience over reliability.
Wireless systems may be affected by signal interference, pairing failures, connection drops, battery condition, communication delays, or changing conditions inside and around the vehicle. These risks become even more important in motorsport environments, where vibration, heat, surrounding electronics, and high-speed operation demand consistent performance.
When a driver presses a button, the system must respond—every time.
That is why the MADTRACE® Racing Steering Wheel System uses OEM-grade wiring, connectors, and secure physical connections throughout the system.

Many competing systems rely on conventional molded or printed plastic components to reduce manufacturing costs. JQ Werks takes a fundamentally different approach.
The MADTRACE® GEN II Podium Line is constructed from precision 5-axis CNC-machined billet aluminum. This manufacturing process allows us to create complex surfaces, precise tolerances, sharper transitions, and a level of structural rigidity that cannot be matched by inexpensive plastic construction.

GEN II continues the design language of our original system while introducing more defined details, greater surface depth, and a cleaner, more substantial feel. Every contour, mounting point, and control position is considered as part of the complete driver interface.

Essential vehicle controls directly on the steering wheel may appear to be a new feature among some competing products. At JQ Werks, this technology is not new.
More than two years ago, our Prototype Podium Line and Formula Line systems had already placed essential steering-column functions directly at the driver’s fingertips. Many of our GEN I applications also integrated functions traditionally located on the center console 3 years ago.

Depending on the vehicle application, our systems can provide direct access to functions such as:

5. Complete On-Wheel Programming with the OLED Driver Information Display

The OLED Driver Information Display—DID—is more than a screen. It serves as the integrated control center for the entire MADTRACE® system.
While other programmable steering wheel systems may require a laptop, separate software, or a wired computer connection every time a setting needs to be changed, the DID allows the driver to program the complete system directly from the steering wheel.
Through its compact interface, the driver can configure supported settings such as:

The DID also supports three programmable profiles. Each profile can store a different system configuration, allowing the same compatible steering wheel to be used across multiple vehicles without reprogramming every individual setting from the beginning.
For example, a driver can create one profile for a street car, another for a dedicated track car, and a third for an additional compatible vehicle or alternate driving setup. After moving the steering wheel to another compatible MADTRACE®-equipped vehicle, the driver can simply select the appropriate saved profile.
This makes the system especially valuable for customers who own multiple performance vehicles or use one steering wheel across different applications. It also provides the flexibility to save different button layouts and RevLED configurations for street driving, track use, or individual driver preferences.

The DID turns the MADTRACE® system into a self-contained and adaptable driver interface. Instead of depending on external hardware, the programming capability travels with the steering wheel.

7. A True Purpose-Built GT Steering Wheel

The MADTRACE® Formula Line is not a conventional steering wheel that has been cut, reshaped, or adapted to fit the regular hub. It is a true GT-style steering wheel engineered from the ground up as one complete driver-control system.
Some competing products begin with an existing steering wheel, remove portions of its original structure, and attach the remaining rim to a separate control hub. Although the finished product may resemble a GT steering wheel from a distance, the underlying geometry was never designed for that application.
This approach can create awkward proportions and mismatched details throughout the assembly, including:

The Formula Line takes a fundamentally different approach.
We started from a clean sheet and developed the steering wheel, grips, spokes, control surfaces, button positions, display placement, and hub integration as one unified system. Every dimension and angle was considered around the driver’s natural hand position and the fast, precise movements required in performance driving.

The grip geometry was not inherited from a conventional round steering wheel. The button layout was not added after the rim had already been designed. The hub was not treated as a separate component that simply needed somewhere to mount.
Everything was engineered together from the beginning.
This clean-sheet approach allows the Formula Line to deliver properly aligned grips, more natural control placement, balanced proportions, and a cohesive appearance from every angle. It feels intentional because every component was created for the same purpose.
The difference is visible in the details—but more importantly, it can be felt from the driver’s seat.
